Things to Do at Jokulsarlon Lagoon, Iceland
Jokulsarlon Lagoon is in Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland. The activities here depend on the time of year. Boat tours and kayaking run in the warmer months, ice cave tours run in the colder months, and the northern lights season covers the darker months of autumn, winter and early spring. This page sets out what is available and when.
Boat tours on the lagoon
Two kinds of boat tour operate on the lagoon. Amphibious boat tours run from May to November. Zodiac tours run from May to October.
If you plan to visit in November, the amphibious boat is the option that is still running. From May to October you can choose between the two.
Kayaking
Kayaking is available from May to September. It has a shorter season than the boat tours, so check your dates if you want to paddle.
Ice cave tours
Ice cave tours run from October to April. Amphibious boat tours run until November, so the two overlap in October and November.
October is the one month when ice cave tours and Zodiac tours both run. April is the last month for ice cave tours, and May is the first month for boat tours.
Northern lights
Northern lights season runs from September to April. It overlaps with the ice cave tour season from October to April, so a winter trip can combine the two.
Getting there
Hornafjordur Airport is about 5 km north of Hofn town. Flights from Reykjavik take about 55 minutes.
Choosing when to go
May is the month when boat tours start, and it is the first month of kayaking as well. September is the last month for kayaking and the first month of northern lights season. From October to April, ice cave tours and northern lights are both available.
We do not list individual tours on this page yet. Check the dates and details with a tour operator before you book.
